The global n-butylene and isobutylene market size reached 2436.2 Thousand Tonnes in 2023. By 2032, IMARC Group expects the market to reach 4600.8 Thousand Tonnes, at a projected CAGR of 7.30% during 2023-2032.

  • One of the key factors driving the N-Butylene and Isobutylene market is increased government support, encouraging the use of cleanness fuel and cleanness feedstock through various incentives and legislations.
  • The stricter environmental laws have led to a greater use of N-Butylene and Isobutylene in fuel blending because of its high-octane rating and reduced emissions, boosting the market share. Government initiatives promoting low-emission fuels further enhance this trend, offering subsidies and tax incentives that encourage the adoption of these compounds.
  • The stricter environmental legislations, more usage of N-Butylene and Isobutylene in the blending of fuels, due to the high octane rating and low emission capability, have concluded with additional market shares. Government policies encouraging the use of low emission fuels strengthen this behavior, providing subsidies and tax relaxation to help gain momentum in demand for these compounds.
  • Demand for N-Butylene and Isobutylene is further boosted for its use as a feedstock in the production of formaldehyde, which finds use in a variety of applications including those in the automotive, healthcare, and construction industries. This is further complimented with advancements in production technique leading to enhanced yield and minimal wastages thus making the product even more lucrative for industrial applications.
  • Furthermore, N-Butylene and isobutylene are considered to be gaining much more popularity among raw materials in the chemical industry for the manufacturing of chemicals, such as acetic acids, olefins used in packaging, and automobile manufacturing. This will drive growth in acceptance due to high versatility and efficiency in producing high-demand derivatives. Moreover, the commercialization of N-Butylene and Isobutylene to Olefin (MTO) technology really re-establishes the market share of N-Butylene and Isobutylene going forwards as an economic route for the synthesis of ethylene and propylene.
  • Moreover, N-Butylene and Isobutylene production are now surging because of their emergent applications in technology for energy storage, such as in the fuel cells that power electric vehicles or as a back-up power supply, transversing across a wide array of sectors.
  • The market share is further growing with the enhanced demand for N-Butylene and Isobutylene in the chemical, automotive, and construction industries in the developing countries, which are highly industrialized and urbanized. This increased use grows out of the infrastructure development projects requiring use of high-performance level materials.
  • A high level of investment in the petrochemical industry has also led to a tremendous increase in the production of n-Butylene and Isobutylene. These involve huge investments in capital towards the research and development of better methods of production.
  • It is also witnessing positive growth in the market, as developments such as N-Butylene and Isobutylene are being taken up in the marine industry as a substitute cleaner fuel with low sulfur content and lower emission rates.
  • Growth is also observed in the market due to the technological evolvement in the catalytic process, which is gradually increasing the overall efficiency and reducing the cost, thus leading to competitive pricing to further penetrate the market.

Product Description

N-Butylene and isobutylene are both hydrocarbons and belong to the class of compounds known as alkenes, which contain carbon-carbon double bonds. N-Butylene, also known as butene, refers to any of the alkene molecules with the formula C4H8. There are several isomers of butene, including 1-butene, cis-2-butene, trans-2-butene, and isobutylene (2-methylpropene). Butene is a colorless, flammable hydrocarbon. It is lighter than air and has a faint petroleum-like odor. On the other hand, isobutylene is an isomer of butene with the chemical formula C4H8. It is structurally different due to the branching in its carbon chain. Isobutylene is also a colorless, flammable hydrocarbon with a mild odor. It is used extensively in the chemical industry.

In industrial applications, butene usually serves either as a monomer in the creation of polymers or as a co-monomer of plastics. Depending on the present catalyst at the polymerization process, the monomer can tend to polymerize into more extensive molecules. Isobutylene, however, is primarily used in the production of various types of polymers, for example butyl rubber, but still, it is used in the manufacturing of the isooctane that raises the octane number in the fuel.

N-Butylene is extensively employed in chemical synthesis through the technique of polybutylene and other polymers. It is also an intermediate for producing other chemicals. Main applications of isobutylene include the production of very fine rubber and fuel additives that enhance the performance of gasoline. It is also used as a chemical building block in synthesizing a lot of other chemicals that go into the manufacture of antioxidants, pharmaceuticals, and perfumes.
