Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd is taking a significant step beyond power generation with plans to set up a large ingot and wafer manufacturing facility in Andhra Pradesh. The company will invest INR 6,675 crore to build a 10 GW greenfield plant in Nellore, a move that places it firmly within India’s fast-growing solar manufacturing space.
State government officials confirmed that the project has been approved by the State Investment Promotion Board, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. Once built, the unit is expected to be the largest ingot and wafer manufacturing facility in the country.
The facility will be located at the IFFCO Kisan Special Economic Zone in Nellore. The Andhra Pradesh government has set aside 200 acres for the project. Of this, 120 acres will be used in the first phase, with the remaining land reserved in case Tata Power decides to expand later.
Ingot and wafer manufacturing sits at the very start of the solar power plant value chain. These materials are used to make solar cells, modules, and even find applications in semiconductors. By investing at this level, Tata Power Renewable Energy is aligning itself with India’s push to reduce reliance on imports and build local capacity for critical components.
The company expects the plant to create about 1,000 direct jobs once it becomes operational. Beyond that, the construction phase and related services are likely to generate additional employment in and around Nellore.
To meet its energy needs, Tata Power Renewable Energy will also set up a 200 MW captive renewable power plant. This will ensure the factory runs on clean electricity, keeping emissions low while supporting long-term operational stability.
State officials pointed out that factors like ready industrial land, good road and port connectivity, and reliable access to green power helped attract this investment. Nellore has already begun to draw interest from other renewable energy manufacturers, and this project is expected to add momentum to that trend.
Welcoming the investment, IT and Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh said the project reflects confidence in Andhra Pradesh’s industrial policies and execution capabilities. He noted that it would help build a stronger solar manufacturing base while offering skilled employment opportunities.
This will be Tata Power Renewable Energy’s first manufacturing project in Andhra Pradesh as part of its wider clean energy plans. The state government has reiterated its commitment to supporting such investments through quicker approvals and industry-friendly policies, as it looks to position Andhra Pradesh as a preferred destination for renewable energy manufacturing.
