Lithium ion capacitor (LIC), refers to a type of electrochemical energy storage device that combines the high energy density of lithium-ion batteries with the high power density of electrochemical capacitors. Unlike traditional capacitors that store electrical energy in an electric field, LICs use both an electric field and a chemical reaction to store energy. LICs typically consist of two electrodes, a positive electrode made of carbon material and a negative electrode made of a lithium-based material. The electrodes are separated by a porous separator and immersed in an electrolyte solution. During charging, lithium ions from the electrolyte solution are absorbed into the negative electrode, while at the same time, electrons are stored on the positive electrode. When the LIC is discharged, the stored electrons flow from the positive electrode through an external circuit, while the lithium ions move through the separator to the positive electrode, producing an electric current. LICs have a high-power density, making them suitable for applications that require rapid charging and discharging, such as in electric vehicles and renewable energy systems. They also have a long cycle life, low self-discharge rate, and are more environment-friendly than traditional batteries.
