Polyacrylamide (PAM) refers to a water-soluble synthetic polymer with the chemical formula (C3H5NO)n. It is manufactured by the polymerization of acrylamide, a compound obtained by the hydration of acrylonitrile. It is a colorless, non-toxic, and non-resorbable hydrogel material with cohesive, hydrophilic, and biocompatible properties. PAM is widely used as a flocculant for water treatment, sludge de-watering, and removal of suspended particles from sewage and industrial effluents due to its gel-like properties, high efficiency, and rapid dissolution. It is also employed as a soil conditioner, thickening agent, and binder and stabilizer in cosmetic products. In recent years, PAM has gained traction across the oil and gas, pulp and paper, agriculture, food processing, personal care, and mining industries.
Polyacrylamide Market Trends:
Anionic PAM is extensively utilized for industrial sewage treatment in iron and steel plants and metallurgical, electroplating, and coal-washing wastewater plants. As a result, the escalating demand for flocculants or coagulants for treating municipal and industrial wastewater represents the primary factor driving the market growth. Besides this, the growing adoption of anionic PAM in drinking water treatment due to its high flocculation efficiency is augmenting the product demand. Additionally, governments and regulatory bodies of various countries are implementing stringent environmental regulations for industrial wastewater treatment. Along with this, the rising need to conserve the depleting natural water resources on account of high levels of wastewater discharge is accelerating product adoption rate. Furthermore, the increasing usage of PAM for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) to improve oil recovery efficiency is catalyzing the market growth. Moreover, several leading players are making heavy investments in research and development (R&D) activities to enhance product quality and reduce the overall costs. Other factors, including the introduction of bio-based PAM, favorable government initiatives, technological advancements, and rapid industrialization, are also creating a positive market outlook.
