- Bacterial infections are common in livestock owing to factors like crowded living conditions and exposure to pathogens. Moreover, stressful conditions such as transportation, changes in environment, or nutritional deficiencies, can weaken the immune system of livestock. A compromised immune system makes animals more vulnerable to bacterial infections. Livestock are frequently exposed to a variety of bacterial pathogens present in their environment like in feed, water, soil, and bedding material. Pathogens can lead to a wide range of infections in livestock. Besides this, sulfamethazine is effective against a wide range of bacteria including those causing respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urinary tract infections (UTIs) in animals.
- As per the IMARC Group, the animal health market recorded US$ 37.8 Billion in 2023 in the global market. The growing focus on animal health, driven by the rising demand for animal protein among individuals across the globe, is influencing the market positively. People are recognizing the importance of protein in their daily lives, thereby demanding protein-based food products. In addition, changing dietary patterns due to rapid urbanization further contributes to the market growth. Furthermore, the increasing need for antibiotics like sulfamethazine to maintain the health and productivity of livestock is impelling the growth of the market.
- The sulfamethazine demand is further propelled by its utilization in the treatment of coccidiosis, a common parasitic infection in poultry and other livestock caused by protozoa of the genus Eimeria.
- Sulfamethazine is also becoming increasingly popular in aquaculture settings. It is beneficial in treating bacterial infections in fish and other aquatic species, helping to maintain the health and productivity of farmed aquatic populations. It is particularly vital in intensive aquaculture operations where fish are reared in high densities, making them more susceptible to disease outbreaks. It can be administered to fish via several routes including oral administration through medicated feed, immersion baths, or incorporation into the water. This flexibility in administration allows for effective delivery of the medication to the affected fish and the aquatic environment.

Product Description
Sulfamethazine, also known as sulfadimidine, is a commonly used sulphonamide drug in veterinary medicine that acts as an antibacterial compound to treat livestock diseases such as gastrointestinal and respiratory tract infections. It has a spectrum of antimicrobial action similar to other sulfonamides. It is rapidly and easily absorbed by the oral route of administration among animals. It is designed to target bacterial dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS), an enzyme involved in the synthesis of folic acid in bacteria. It inhibits bacterial synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by competing with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) for binding to dihydropteroate synthetase.
Apart from this, sulfamethazine controls various infectious like coryza (Avibacterium paragallinarum), coccidiosis (Eimeria tenella, Eimeria necatrix), acute fowl cholera (Pasteurella multocida), and pullorum disease (Salmonella Pullorum) among chickens, swine, and cattle.
