Market Overview Q3 Ending September 2025

Northeast Asia: Demand pressures rose sharply, supported by strong consumption in high-tech manufacturing sectors such as permanent magnets, efficient lighting, and display technologies across China, Japan, and South Korea. Industrial producers expanded procurement as new production lines came online and older facilities underwent refurbishment. On the supply side, disruptions in mining and refining capacity due to regulatory tightening, environmental compliance costs, and energy price volatility restricted availability. Cost factors also influenced pricing as international shipping rates stayed elevated because of high fuel expenses and port congestion. Domestic logistics costs climbed as inland transport from mining or refining sites to coastal export terminals became more expensive with rising fuel charges. In addition, environmental and compliance regulations in China governing rare earth extraction and processing raised operational costs, which suppliers transferred into market prices.

Product Description

Terbium (Tb) is a silvery-white rare earth element belonging to the lanthanide series. It is relatively soft, malleable, and exhibits excellent magnetic, optical, and electronic properties. Terbium is primarily extracted from monazite and bastnäsite ores and is usually obtained as a byproduct of other rare earth processing. Industrially, terbium is used in green phosphors for fluorescent lamps, LEDs, and display screens, as well as in magnetostrictive alloys such as Terfenol-D, which are applied in sensors, actuators, and sonar systems. A critical use is in the production of high-performance permanent magnets, particularly for wind turbines and electric vehicle motors, where terbium improves resistance to demagnetization under high temperatures. Its combination of scarcity, specialized applications, and growing role in renewable energy technologies underscores its importance in modern high-tech industries.
